After a day of (mis)adventures in the rain at Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Rich and I stopped at an overlook along Route 6 for a view over the river. There was a brief break in the rain and we hoped to catch a glimpse of Bear Mountain and perhaps some activity on the water. When we peered over the stone wall, however, another interesting sight confronted us—a survey disk on the rock ledges below! We climbed down to it and discovered that it was PTOLEMY. Without a datasheet we weren't sure if there were auxiliary marks to be found; our brief search revealed nothing. We (correctly) guessed that since the date of monumentation was so recent, this may well be a GPS station without a need for reference marks. The disk is in good, but weathered condition and is set as described.

DESCRIBED BY NY DEPT OF TRANSP 1995 (KDS) THE STATION IS LOCATED AT A SCENIC OVERLOOK AREA ABOVE THE EAST SHORE OF THE HUDSON RIVER ALONG US HIGHWAY 6, ABOUT 4.5 KM (2.8 MI) NORTHWEST OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF US HIGHWAYS 6, 9 AND 202, ON THE NORTH SIDE OF PEEKSKILL, GO NORTHWEST ON HIGHWAYS 6 AND 202 FOR 3.7 KM (2.3 MI) TO A SCENIC OVERLOOK AND THE STATION ON THE LEFT, OFF OF AND BELOW THE SOUTH END OF THE OVERLOOK PARKING AREA. THE STATION IS A SURVEY DISK SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK ABOUT 1.5 M (4.9 FT) BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE PAVED PARKING AREA AND WITHIN THE FENCED CORNER AREA OVERLOOKING THE HUDSON RIVER. IT IS 10.2 M (33.5 FT) NORTH FROM THE SOUTH-MOST 90 DEGREE CORNER POST OF THE CHAIN LINK FENCE, 3.35 M (10.99 FT) DUE EAST FROM THE CHAIN LINK FENCE, 0.5 M (1.6 FT) WEST FROM A LARGE FREESTANDING OVAL BOULDER, AND 10.9 M (35.8 FT) SOUTH FROM THE SOUTH END OF THE STONE WALL FORMING THE WEST EDGE OF THE PARKING AREA.
