Rich and I recovered this reference mark as part of our recovery of PE1769, the SCHOODIC RESET tri-station. RM3 is in good condition. See PE1769 for details and photographs.

A report on the condition of this reference mark was submitted to NGS, along with the following recovery note:

Reference mark disk recovered in good condition. There is a small hole in the center of the disk, but the disk is solid in its setting and does not appear otherwise damaged or disturbed. The 1971 description and to-reach are accurate.

NGS Official Description, 1965 (see datasheet for recent updates) :

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1965 (NCS) A STANDARD REFERENCE DISK STAMPED SCHOODIC NO 3 1860, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN EXPOSED BEDROCK, ON THE SOUTHERN EXTREMITY OF A OF SCHOODIC HEAD IN ACADIA NATIONAL PARK EXTENSION ON THE SCHOODIC PENINSULA. THIS SPOT GIVES CLEAR VIEW FROM NORTHEAST TO WEST, AND WAS ESTABLISHED BECAUSE OF HEAVY GROWTH SURROUNDING THE STATION MARK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM SCHOODIC 1860, PACK SOUTHWARD TO THE TIP OF THE SHOULDER AND THE STATION. SCHOODIC RM 3 THIS RM WAS ESTABLISHED BY SOMEONE FROM THE COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY FOR MR. C.F. MERRIAM ABOUT 1965, BY TRAVERSE FROM STATION SCHOODIC 1860. I CANT FIND ANYTHING ON IT IN THE PUBLISHED DATA. I OCCUPIED IT TO PROVE THAT SULLIVANS HOUSE CHIMNEY NO. 1 1860 IS ACTUALLY THE EAST SULLIVAN UNION CHURCH CUPOLA, AND ALSO TO MAKE A CHECK ON THE REBUILT CHURCH IN BAR HARBOR (BAR HARBOR CONG. CHURCH SPIRE).
